ULB polls: NDA reaches seat-sharing pact

The NDA partners (TDP, BJP and JSP) on Thursday reached an agreement to share seats for the upcoming urban local body elections scheduled to be held on October 28.

The TDP would contest 11 of the 17 municipal corporations, including the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, while the JSP and the BJP would be in the fray in four and two corporations respectively.

The announcement came a day before the filing of nominations and on a day when the YSRCP too announced its candidates for several corporations and municipalities.

As per the agreement, the JSP would contest Vijayawada, Kakinada, Mangalagiri-Tadepalli and Srikakulam municipal corporations, while the BJP would be in the fray in Rajamahendravaram and Anantapur corporations. The JSP is likely to field Vangaveeti Radha as its mayoral candidate from the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, sources said.

The NDA partners reached a consensus after a series of talks over the past few days. The JSP and the BJP were said to have sought more mayoral seats, but the TDP leadership was able to convince them to accept six corporators considering the reach it had at the lowest level, sources said.

Of the 106 municipalities and nagar panchayats, the TDP would contest in 78, the JSP in 21 and the BJP in seven. With the nomination process starting from Friday, the local leadership of the three parties would decide on the number of corporators or councilors each party would contest for, the source added.

Of the total 123 urban local bodies, TDP would contest 89, JSP 25 and BJP nine.
