Mumbai Indians, Mahela Jayawardene mutually agreed to bring a “fresh perspective”; probably a new coach

Hardik Pandya, left, and Mahela Jayawardene (PTI Photo) Mumbai Indians and head coach Mahela Jayawardene have jointly decided to bring in a new perspective starting from the upcoming Indian Premier League season. At a meeting of top officials earlier this week, the two sides reached an agreement. TimesofIndia.com has learned that the new head coach is likely to be finalized soon. The IPL giants have already identified several candidates for the top job and interviews could be held in the coming week to finalize the new head coach. Jayawardene is unlikely to remain in the MI lineup in any other capacity, and the franchise is clear about going in a different direction before embarking on a new cycle.“Mahela is always part of the same family. It has been mutually decided to bring in a new perspective from the upcoming season and the new coach is likely to be finalized in the coming week. Names are on the table and a decision will be made soon,” said a source following the development.Jayawardene joined the five-time champions on a “two + one” deal in 2024. Under the former Sri Lankan captain, Mumbai Indians made the play-offs in 2025 but finished ninth the following year. 2026 was a disappointing year for the giants as they won just four games in a campaign marred by injuries, availability concerns and dressing room turmoil. It now remains to be seen how Hardik Pandya’s trade talks pan out in the coming weeks. Franchise sources say the status quo continues, but activity cannot be ruled out closer to the retention deadline.
