A two-day extended district committee meeting of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) concluded in Kozhikode on Wednesday, with leaders claiming that the political attitude of a large section of voters who voted against the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the recent Assembly elections is gradually changing.
Addressing the media, leaders like district secretary M. Mehboob and state committee members P. Mohanan, A. Pradeepkumar and V. Vaseef pointed out that this was evident in the results of the Kuttichira ward by-election of Kozhikode Corporation. The winning margin of the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate has reduced drastically compared to the 2025 local body elections.
Mr. Mehboob said the LDF suffered defeat in the Kozhikode elections mainly due to the consolidation of anti-Left forces, with the Indian Union Muslim League and Jamaat-e-Islami Hind leading the charge from the front. There was an impression that the CPI(M) had an “accord” with the BJP. A large number of voters from minority communities who previously supported the Left were swayed by this campaign and voted against it. However, according to the Kuttichira by-election results, the trend seemed to be reversing, he claimed. CPI(M) leaders pointed out that the main reason for this situation was the anti-people policies of the United Democratic Front (UDF) government.
Meanwhile, the party has decided to field 10 leaders in the district committee. Koyilandy District Secretary TK Chandran, Balussery District Secretary TK Sumesh, Kakkodi District Secretary PKE Chandran, Kozhikode Municipal District Secretary M. Ajaya Kumar and Babu Parassery, E. Prem Kumar, UK Sudharma, K. Arun, who are the representatives of invited class and mass organizations and District Office Permanent Secretary TP Krishnan.
According to party sources, the open debate on Mr. Mehboob’s organizational report continued on Wednesday. A total of 35 delegates took part in the debate. Based on the suggestions raised at the meetings, it was decided to organize study courses for branch secretaries, local committee members and all party members in the following months. Efforts will also be made to address the problems of students, youth, women, professionals and cultural activists.
