The Keral Commission has issued a final announcement of Kochi Corporation’s defined divisions, complemented by their new borders, and increased the total number of divisions from 74 to 76, which affected extensive changes in their existing borders and numbers.
Although the exercise of the definition increased the total number of divisions by only two, it created several new divisions in the process and removed several existing ones, which were included in other divisions after reworking the borders. Edappally Changampuzha (Division 31), Stadium (34), Puthiya Road (34), Palluruthy East (56), Palluruuth (64) and Mundamvel East (68) are new divisions. Before the definition, Vaduthal West, Panampilly Nagar, Kathrikadava and AyyAppankkavu responded. After delimitation, these divisions are now numbered 24, 50, 13 and 19.
Earavely (Division 3) and Chambakara (Division 50) have ceased to exist. In addition, the boundaries of most divisions have undergone a change in the sea. The population of defined divisions is between 6,500 and 9,000. Iceland South has the lowest population at 2,651, while Kunnumpuram has the largest population of 9 119.
While the West Kochi region received two new divisions, the zone threw one division. Previously, divisions were numbered from Fort Kochi (division 1) and ended with Thitazham (74). Now, although it starts with the same Fort Kochi division, Fort Kochi Veli (76) ends. The numbers of all divisions except Fort Kochi (1), Kalvathy (2), Karipalam (4) and KoChangada (6) have also undergone a change.
The parties were given the time within 4 December 2024 to submit complaints to the proposal of the notification of the definition. More than 1,000 complaints about the definition of the department were received in 96 local authorities – 82 Gram Panchayats, 13 municipalities and Kochi Corporation – in the Ernakulam district. The definition of the department was mainly based on the census in 2011 and the number of existing households. Most complaints concerned change the number of households and borders defined departments. Since then, the Commission for Definition has organized hearing to deal with complaints.
