The University of Manchester is planning an India Center in Bengaluru to help Indian students find work at home

The University of Manchester will soon open its new center for the first time in India, in Bengaluru. The center is expected to enable students to study at its UK campus and also help Indian students studying there find job opportunities and internships, said Duncan Ivison, Vice-Chancellor, University of Manchester.

Prof. Speaking to The Hindu on Friday, Ivison, who was in the city, told The Hindu on Friday: “The proposed center will facilitate the academic journey for aspiring Indian students to study at the University of Manchester. We also aim to help those currently studying at our university find jobs and internships back in India. This center will help create these connections with industry partners, various educational institutions and government institutions.”

He added, “We also aim to connect students who want to become entrepreneurs with people who can fund their startups.”

While noting that the university has centers in China, Singapore, Dubai and Hong Kong, Professor Ivison said, “Our recent meetings with alumni in Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai have been fruitful. I have been getting insights from them to understand the work scenario and industry requirements in India.”

He said there are 50,000 students on their campus and about one-third of them already have some form of work experience or internship or are running a business.

Apart from the international centre, the university is also planning to set up a museum in Bengaluru. Prof. Ivison said, “The aim of this museum is to bring art, culture and STEM education together and introduce them to students, researchers and people. I believe that art and culture in one society can help us find answers to the most complex problems apart from science and technology. For this, we are working with the Science Gallery in Bengaluru.”

The University Museum of Manchester recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the gallery.

Popular programs among Indian students in UK

Professor Ivison said engineering, computer science and business studies were still popular programs among Indian students at the university, followed by social sciences and humanities programmes.

The University of Manchester also has close ties with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). He said: “We offer a joint PhD program with them, which has 15 PhD students from India and Manchester working together on various research projects involving AI, clean energy, quantum technology, life sciences, translating discoveries in the life sciences into solutions that can help cure cancer, healthy aging and more.”
