A two-day extended district committee meeting of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) will be held in Kozhikode from October 6, 2026.

According to sources, the meeting is expected to follow up on the remedial steps suggested during the expanded state committee held here last month. Leader of the Opposition and member of the party’s political bureau Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the meeting at the AKG Auditorium near the CPI(M) district committee office. Central committee members EP Jayarajan, Elamaram Kareem, KK Shailaja, CS Sujatha, PK Sreemathi, P. Sathidevi and TP Ramakrishnan will be present.

Around 120 leaders including district committee members, area committee secretaries and party members who are functionaries of class and mass organizations will attend. The decisions taken at the extended meeting of the State Committee will be explained to them. Delegates will also have the opportunity to express their views.

The meeting assumes significance in the backdrop of electoral setbacks suffered by the CPI(M) in Kozhikode, considered one of its strongholds in the state, of late. While the party lost power in Kozhikode panchayat district and a large number of local bodies, its presence in the legislature from the district was reduced to just one member. Of the 13 seats in the district, only the Left Democratic Front (LDF) could win from Beypore. Mohamed Riyas, a member of the state secretariat of the PA party, emerged victorious from this. The setback is considered severe as the CPI(M)-led front suffered defeat in seats like Kozhikode North, Elathur, Balussery, Koyilandy and Perambra. Revolutionary Marxist Party candidate KK Rema, backed by the United Democratic Front (UDF), romped home for a second consecutive term in Vadakara. In the 2021 parliamentary polls, the LDF won 11 seats in the district.

Meanwhile, a section of leaders cite the reduced majority of the UDF candidate in the recent by-election to Kuttichira ward of the Kozhikode corporation as an indication of voter dissatisfaction with the state government. He believes the party can capitalize on this feeling.

The party leadership expects that the message of internal correction adopted at the expanded state committee meeting may be pushed in the coming days to rejuvenate the cadre. The proposed remedial measures are likely to be implemented through similar actions proposed in the area and local committees. The emphasis is likely to be on direct interactions with people from all walks of life to reach them. Family meetings were held in all local committees in the district prior to the expanded state committee meeting in September. Party officials say more than a million people attended, including party sympathizers.
