New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) is expected to launch a Mausam GPT -powered AI, which will provide accurate local weather information in regional languages via text and sound within six months.
The key focus of this initiative is to make the system available on both smartphones and on basic phones with elements, allowing small farmers to get timely weather forecasts in printing only two or three buttons, said the Minister of Earth Sciences Mont.
Localized weather forecasts
The aim of this initiative is to benefit farmers by offering localized weather forecasts to help them decide that the best time to sow crops. Travelers can also get advice, improve planning and safety.
India has a total of about 145 million farmers. According to recent data from the census in the field of agriculture, the number of holders of the title or farmers owned by land is around 86 million.
Ravicandran also revealed that IMD plans to get two multidisciplinary oceanographic research vessels for the price £Every 1,000 crore. In addition, a new Antarctic research station “Maitri-2” will be built, near the existing Maitri base, with the total project costs £2,000 crore, including a boat with an Icebreaker by 2029.
Ravicandran stressed that the aim is to provide weather information that really benefits people, especially in rural areas. “Simply put it can rain or may not rain, as in the city, is little useful,” he said.
Monsoon GPT
He explained that the early version called “Monsoon GPT” has already been developed, but needs improvements to work on features and smartphones. “For example, a small farmer should be able to obtain weather forecasts by pressing only two or three buttons, even on the basic phone.”
The system uses Telecom Towers to determine the exact position of the caller. It then provides a simple forecast in the local language, both in the text and in the voice. For example, the message could say: “Day 1 – no rain, day 2 – no rain, day 3 – light rain.”
Voice messages will help those who can’t read. In 2024, rural telen density in India measuring the number of phones per 100 people, 58.29%.
Weather forecast
Travelers with smartphones can easily enter the date and the city to receive predictions and advice on suitable clothing, Ravichandran added.
The first version of Mausam GPT will support five languages with plans to expand to 10 and finally 25 languages.
On the front of the ocean economy, IMD seeks to increase its contribution to the Indian national economy from 4% to 8%. This will include widespread activities in fishing, marine hiking and resource mining. The Ministry of Sciences of the country cooperates with other departments to realize this vision.
As for the new research vessels, Ravichandran said: “Every ship will be able to transfer scientists up to six kilometers deep into the ocean to explore both living and inanimate resources. At present, we only know about 1% deep ocean.”
The vessels will support deep scientific surveys and sampling within the Ministry of the Deep Ocean. These vessels, equipped with advanced laboratories and scientific equipment, will actually be multidisciplinary.
