The four-day Dasara Yoga began on Wednesday at the JK Grounds in Mysuru. The event themed ‘Yoga for a Healthy Tomorrow’ was inaugurated by Gavi Mutt Seer Abhinava Gavisiddeshwara Mahaswami in the presence of Yoga trainers, practitioners, enthusiasts and officials.
Yoga Dasara highlighted the role of yoga in addressing the risk factors of an increasingly unhealthy lifestyle. Experts participating in the event on the opening day emphasized the benefits and scientific approach to yoga, stressing that it should complement medical treatment rather than serve as an alternative to it.
Focusing on Ashtanga yoga, Srivatsa, director of the Government Ayurveda College and Hospital, said the practice of yoga should not be limited to basic postures and pranayama. A personalized yoga practice is mandatory to be effective, stating that yoga should be practiced consistently.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recognition of Mysuru as a yoga hub, efforts should be made to reach even the last person in the society through programs like ‘Mane Mane Yoga’ in the coming days, said Ganesh Kumar, director of Swami Vivekananda Yoga and Anusandhana Samsthana.
After the opening event, seminars by medical experts were held. They were followed by a performance by an artistic troupe performing Yoga Nruthya Roopaka, a fusion of classical dance with yoga poses.
A national yoga competition in 23 categories for various age groups, including senior citizens, will be held on October 16 at the P. Kalingarao Auditorium, Karnataka Exhibition Authority. Approximately 1,650 participants registered online.
A pilot study is underway
Nanjangud taluk has been identified for a pilot study of yoga training for rural people under the National Ayush Mission, according to an AYUSH department official.
A 90-day yoga training program is underway in 45 gram panchayaths of Nanjangud taluk with 90 trainers from August 1. Participants of the pilot project will participate in Rural Yoga Dasara scheduled on October 18 at Government PU College Stadium, Nanjangud.
Based on the feedback, the training program will be implemented in the rest of Mysuru district, according to the official.
On October 19 between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM, enthusiasts will take part in a trek at Chamundi Hills, concluding Yoga Dasara.
