During a breakfast meeting at his residence with cabinet colleagues on Thursday, Siddaramaiah informed the ministers of his decision to resign and said he would be succeeded by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, as per instructions from the Congress high command.
Siddaramaiah submitted his resignation to the Special Secretary to the Governor at the Lok Bhavan. Special Secretary Prabhu Shankar accepted the resignation in the absence of Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and several cabinet ministers were present alongside Siddaramaiah when he tendered his resignation.
“I have received the resignation but the governor will accept it,” Prabhu Shankar was quoted as saying by PTI.
In a photo shared by the Chief Minister’s office from the assembly, Siddaramaiah is seen hugging an emotional Shivakumar.
DK Shivakumar Net Worth
DK Shivakumar has a declared total net worth ₹1,413 crore (over $170 million). According to his official election affidavit, this figure includes the value of movable property ₹1,140 crore and immovable property included ₹273 million, against liabilities of approx ₹265 million.
This data was submitted to the Election Commission during the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections.
The release marked a significant increase over ₹840.08 crore in assets declared in 2018.
The affidavit also stated that Shivakumar owned one registered vehicle — a Toyota Qualis, along with luxury watches from brands like Rolex and Hublot, besides holding gold and silver. It further revealed that 19 criminal cases were pending against the Kanakapura MLA when he filed his nomination papers for the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections.
What happened at the recent meeting in New Delhi?
Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar were in New Delhi on Tuesday where they attended a meeting with senior Congress leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi.
Officially, the Congress claimed that the discussions were centered on the upcoming Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections, dismissing reports of a possible leadership change in Karnataka as mere “speculation”.
Congress general secretary KC Venugopal told reporters that candidates for Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka will be announced along with candidates from other states.
“Today we had a detailed meeting with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharg and LoP Rahul Gandhi. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, General Secretary in charge of Karnataka (Randeep Singh Surjewala) and I were part of the discussion. The whole discussion was only about the upcoming Karnago Rajya Sabha and Karna Council elections.ANI.
“Whatever speculations you people are making are only speculations; no reality… Candidates for Rajya Sabha and Karnataka Council seats will be announced along with other similar seats from other states… That is what we have decided today and nothing else,” he added.
The Congress government in the state has completed three years in office. Over the past 18 months, supporters of Shivakumar have repeatedly claimed that he would eventually take over the role of chief minister.
