Representative image (agency photo) The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) shifted the ongoing President’s Trophy Grade 1 matches from Peshawar and Abbottabad after the federal government declared a state of emergency and imposed governor’s rule in the politically troubled Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The change of venue comes amid escalating political tensions involving the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party of former prime minister Imran Khan that ruled the province. According to a Cricinfo report, the PCB has shifted the matches originally scheduled at Imran Khan Stadium in Peshawar and Abbottabad Cricket Stadium to venues in Sheikhupura and Lahore. The decision disrupted the schedule as the top-flight competition nears the end of its league phase. Matches in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, the other two host cities, will continue as scheduled.
PCB revises venues as political tensions escalate
The state of emergency was declared after the President approved the recommendations of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s federal cabinet. The political development also led to the detention of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and some members of his cabinet, said Pakistan’s junior interior minister Talal Chaudhry, who confirmed the detention to Reuters. As per the revised schedule, Ghani will face Hyderabad Kingsmen Academy at the Rana Naveed Academy in Sheikhupura from October 14. The match between Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has been shifted to the LCCA Ground in Lahore, next to the Gaddafi Stadium, which also starts on October 14.The current round is the penultimate one in the league phase, the sixth round starts on Monday. The PCB has also pushed back the final round by a day, with the matches now starting on October 19.
He also influenced the draw of the final round
The adjusted schedule includes other changes in the final schedules of the tournament. Lahore’s LCCA Ground will host the final round of the encounter between Markhor IT Solutions and Pakistan TV.In Islamabad, Hyderabad Kingsmen Academy will take on State Bank of Pakistan at the National Cricket Ground, while the Diamond Club ground will continue to serve as the other venue in the capital. The venue changes come as the PCB looks to expand domestic cricket beyond its traditional hubs. Abbottabad has regularly hosted first-class matches, while Peshawar’s Imran Khan Stadium returned to the senior home calendar last season after nearly seven years, hosting nine Quaid-e-Azam Trophy matches following renovation work.Peshawar has been allocated the first match of the Pakistan Super League this year. However, the PSL was eventually restricted to Lahore and Karachi amid federal fuel conservation measures introduced after the West Asian crisis. The latest changes highlight how the political situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has affected the domestic cricket calendar, forcing the PCB to relocate matches during a crucial phase of the competition.
Do you think shifting the President’s Trophy matches was the right decision by the PCB?
