Congress MLA and former Indian hockey captain Pargat Singh, the recently appointed president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, officially took charge on Sunday and declared that “Congress is united”.

Punjab Congress leader and AICC General Secretary Sachin Pilot formally handed over the responsibility to Mr. Pargat. Addressing party workers in Chandigarh, Mr. Singh said the Congress has a responsibility not only to fight elections but also to be the voice of the people and stand firm for their rights.

“The people of Punjab are waiting for their rights, justice and a secure future. It is our responsibility to fulfill the expectations of every section, from farmers to the youth. Congress is united and our fight is against a system that has failed to ensure the legitimate rights of the people,” he said.

He said it was imperative to understand the sentiments of people awaiting justice in sacrilege cases and raise their voice in support of justice. The real test of any government, he added, was public confidence and the positive change it brought to people’s lives.

Hitting out at Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Mr. Singh said the government should focus on the problems faced by the people of Punjab instead of worrying about the Congress team.

He said that the Congress has a strong team of experienced leaders and dedicated workers. Referring to the experience of MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, he said the party would work collectively to protect the interests of Punjab.

He alleged that the policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were weakening democratic values in the country.

Mr. Pilot said that the aim of the Congress was not only to achieve political success but also to win the hearts of Punjabis and fulfill their expectations. He expressed confidence that the unity of Congress workers and public support will help strengthen the party’s position in the state.
