Police on Sunday (October 11, 2026) visited the residence of Mamata AITC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and served him a summons for another round of questioning in connection with the party’s Camac Street billboard case, an officer said.
This is the second police visit to Diamond Harbor MP’s Kalighat home in a week for the same purpose. On October 7, Banerjee was not at home and no one was available to receive the notice.
This time it was delivered to Banerjee’s staff at his residence, the officer said.
A team from the Shakespeare Sarani police station reached Banerjee’s Kalighat residence to serve him a notice in connection with a complaint filed by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).
The KMC alleged that police personnel and civic workers were harassed and assaulted last month when they tried to remove TMC signage from a building on Camac Street where the party office is located, an officer said.
At first, no one was ready to accept the announcement. However, after some time, the MP staff got it, he said. The incident is linked to a disturbance on August 27 over the removal of a billboard from the building that houses Banerjee’s office on Camac Street in central Kolkata.
Police and Kolkata Municipal Corporation officials faced protests by Mr. Banerjee’s supporters during the removal of a billboard bearing the name TMC and its twin-flower symbol.
Three FIRs have been registered at the Shakespeare Sarani police station in connection with the incident.
Mr. Banerjee has already been questioned in one of the cases after he turned up at the police station and spoke to investigators for several hours.
The police now want to question him again in the same case.
Firefighters separately delivered a notice in connection with the case.
Condemning the police move, Mamata AITC spokesperson and MLA Kunal Ghosh said, “The BJP (government) has stooped so low that the notice has been served even after Mahalaya, when Durga Puja is just days away.”
