Ranji Trophy Summary: Shami has four wickets, three centuries scored on the opening day

Out-of-favour Indian pacer Mohammed Shami produced an impressive performance with the ball as he claimed four wickets to help Bengal beat Delhi by 240 on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy Group C match on Sunday. Shami returned figures of 4/30 while defending champions Jammu and Kashmir also enjoyed a productive day as Rohit Sharma took five wickets against Madhya Pradesh.

Shami’s performance came Bengal took advantage of the good conditions to dismiss Delhi in 77.3 overs after opting to bowl. Akash Deep took two wickets for 74 runs while Mukesh Kumar took one for 43. Off-spin Amir Ghani also took three wickets for 45 runs.

Shami featured Yash Dhull, Ayush Doseja, Hrithik Shokeen and Divij Mehra. Shokeen top-scored for Delhi with 56 off 98 deliveries, but the hosts failed to put up a substantial run against Bengal’s disciplined attack.

SMARAN SAVES KARNATAKA

Ravichandran Smaran underlined his red ball with a fighting 126 to put Karnataka ahead against Andhra on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group B match on Sunday.

Smaran’s eighth first-class century helped last year’s runners-up recover from a shaky 22 for four to reach 274 all out. The 23-year-old Karnataka captain found support from wicketkeeper KL Shrijith, who scored 58 off 82 balls as the pair stitched a crucial 111-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Indian batsmen KL Rahul, Karun Nair and Mayank Agarwal failed to contribute significantly but Smaran stood firm to prevent Karnataka from collapsing after early setbacks.

Andhra’s most successful bowler was Saurabh Kumar, who played left-arm and returned the trio for 69.

Karnataka then struck twice in the closing stages, leaving Andhra struggling at 16 for two at stumps. The visitors held a lead of 258 runs with Shaik Rasheed and Abhishek Reddy at the crease.

JADEJA SEPTEMBER FOR SAURASHTRA

Indian veteran Ravindra Jadeja played an unbeaten 72 to guide Saurashtra to a strong position on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy match in Rajkot.

Jadeja found valuable support from Prerak Mankad, who was unbeaten on 92 as Saurashtra reached 308 for four at stumps. Opener Chirag Jani also contributed significantly, scoring 83 to help lay the foundation for a substantial first innings stand.

With Jadeja and Mankad still at the crease, Saurashtra will look to build on their strong start and move towards a formidable total when play resumes on the second day.

ROHIT TAKES FIVE

Defending champions Jammu and Kashmir made a great start to their title defense as they bowled out Madhya Pradesh for 196 in the Elite Group A match at the Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium.

Rohit Sharma returned figures of 5/36 from 21.2 overs while Sunil Kumar claimed four wickets in 69 runs. Madhya Pradesh captain Shubham Sharma top-scored with 79 off 174 balls, including eight fours, but received limited support as wickets fell regularly.

Jammu and Kashmir were 3/1 at stumps trailing by 193 runs after Avesh Khan dismissed opener Shubham Khajuria for a duck.
