Sobhana Mostary became the first Bangladeshi woman with a century vs. Australia

Sobhana Mostary wrote the script with a magnificent century against Australia in the second ODI at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane on Sunday 11 October. The Bangladeshi batsman produced a remarkable rescue act after her team suffered a disastrous start to become the first Bangladeshi woman to score an ODI hundred against Australia. Her maiden hundred also made her only the third Bangladeshi woman to register an ODI century, joining Farzana Hoque Pinky and Nigar Sultana Jota on the exclusive list.

Mostary entered with Bangladesh reeling at 8/3 after 7.2 overs. Australia’s Megan Schutt and Kim Garth struck early and left the visitors in deep trouble after being asked to bat first. Schutt dismissed Fargana Hoque and Sharmin Akhter while Garth removed Sarmin Sultana to leave Bangladesh seeking redress.

However, Mostary showed tremendous composure under pressure and joined Nigar captain Sultan Joty to rebuild the innings. The pair gradually steadied the ship before attacking the Australian bowlers, forming one of the most memorable partnerships in Bangladesh women’s cricket history.

Mostary brought up her half-century from 66 balls before shifting gears and continuing her composed attack against the Australian attack. She reached the three-figure mark off 123 balls and celebrated a historic moment with Joty at the other end. Mostary eventually claimed 118 off 134 deliveries, smashing 18 boundaries in a knock that showcased her patience, skill and temperament.

At the other end, Joty played the perfect supporting role, rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries. The duo added a remarkable 195 runs for the fourth wicket, bailing out Bangladesh and setting a new record for the highest partnership for any wicket against Australia in women’s ODIs. Joty remained unbeaten on 74 as Bangladesh finished with 220/6.

Mostary’s success extended beyond women’s cricket. She became only the third Bangladeshi batsman to score a century in Australia after Mahmudullah and Tanzid Hasan Tamim. Her historic knock also eclipsed Fargan Hoque’s previous national record of 107 to become the highest individual score by a Bangladeshi woman in ODIs.

Although Australia’s Georgia Voll later hit an unbeaten 131 to guide the hosts to a nine-wicket victory, Mostary’s landmark innings remained a defining moment for Bangladeshi cricket. Voll shared an opening stand of 162 runs with Phoebe Litchfield, who scored 70, as Australia chased down the target in just 28.1 overs to wrap up the series with a match to spare.

Despite the defeat, Mostary’s performance gave Bangladesh plenty to celebrate. Her record-breaking century and partnership with Joty demonstrated the team’s batting potential and provided an unforgettable highlight on their historic tour of Australia.
