The Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGSPDCL) has suggested electricity consumers in the domestic category to install rooftop solar systems on their houses to reduce electricity bills and help protect the environment.

Southern Discom officials said the Center is providing a subsidy of up to ₹ 78,000 per 3 kW rooftop solar system under Prime Minister Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY). Greater deployment of solar energy would encourage the use of clean energy while providing consumers with an opportunity to lower their electricity bills.

Officials explained that eligible domestic consumers could get a maximum central subsidy of ₹78,000 for installing a 3 kWp rooftop solar system at a rate of ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kWp and ₹18,000 per kW for the next 1 kWp. No additional subsidy will be provided for capacity exceeding 3 kWp.

Financial assistance would be provided for rooftop solar installations implemented by housing association groups and resident welfare associations (GHS/RWAs) to meet the electricity requirements of common facilities, including electric vehicle (EV) charging. For GHS/RWAs, assistance of ₹ 18,000 per kW would be provided for capacities up to 500 kWp subject to a prescribed limit of 3 kWp per household.

To expand the use of renewable energy across the state, the Telangana government approved the installation of rooftop solar systems with a cumulative capacity of 4,066 MW for 20.33 lakh households on 15 November 2025 under the utility-led aggregation (ULA) model.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has in-principle approved 20,175 solar installations in the first phase. To promote use of clean energy in rural areas, the state government has given an administrative sanction of ₹ 943.47 crore to cover 40,349 households in 80 villages with an estimated solar capacity of about 81 MW. Of these, 14,898 households in 43 villages are within TGSPDCL limits.

In addition, solar installations are planned for 16,805 agricultural pump sets with an estimated capacity of about 126 MW. Out of this, 8,964 agricultural pumping sets are within TGSPDCL limits.

As of October 9, TGSPDCL recorded 30,259 registrations in the net-metering category with 29,777 systems installed and a capacity of 640,852 MW. Under PM Surya Ghar, 44,662 registrations were made with 29,816 systems installed with a capacity of 125,613 MW and under Model Solar Village, 4,335 registrations were made with 3,190 installations of 6,407 MW.
