Former MLA visits waste management plant in Vidyaranyapuram following complaints of smell

Former MLA MK Somashekar visited the waste management plant at Vidyaranyapuram in the city on Saturday following complaints of stench emanating from the facility.

Mr. Somashekar said residents of Vidyaranyapuram and nearby localities like Kanakagiri, Chamundipuram, JP Nagar, Nachanahallipalya, Kuvempunagar and Ashokapuram have been complaining of unbearable smell from the facility for the last one week.

Mr. Somashekar said he visited the facility and sought details from officials about the problem after residents made repeated calls to complain about the issue.

Officials were asked the reason why such a foul smell suddenly appeared when no such problem was reported for the past three years.

Expressing strong displeasure at the functioning of the officials, Mr. Somashekar said they were entrusted with the responsibility of scientific waste management and environmental protection.

Suspecting that improper implementation of the bio-cultural method in waste treatment may be contributing to the foul smell, he urged officials to investigate the matter immediately and identify the root cause of the problem.

Officials have been instructed to ensure scientific segregation and proper disposal of waste and take all necessary measures to prevent the spread of odors to residential areas.

He also urged MCC commissioner MK Savith to resolve the issue immediately.

Former MCC corporator M. Sunil of Vidyaranyapuram also urged the authorities to look into the issue immediately. “If the officials do not deal with this issue scientifically, the residents will face serious hardship in the coming days. People from the department are calling us every day to complain about the bad smell. I request the MCC commissioner to issue appropriate directions to the officials and put an end to this problem,” he said.
