The caste census is not merely a statistical exercise, but a “moral commitment” of Indian democracy, said the President of the Mallikarjun Kharge congress on Friday (May 23, 2025) when he called on the party’s spokesman to fearlessly assume the message of social justice.
Mr. Kharge practically dealt with a seminar for the national and state spokesman for Congress, while the former party leader and opposition leader at Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi held a closed door with them.
Congress chief urged his colleagues to treat social justice as an ideological commitment and not an election problem. He said he was the spokesperson’s responsibility to take over this problem at a local level and to create awareness of the masses.
Protection of the constitution
“It is not only the struggle for social justice, but also the struggle for the protection of the constitution.
Congress chief, who described the party’s spokesman as the voice of “our thoughts”, said that as the country knows about the upcoming caste census, “it is our responsibility to take over this topic with facts, sensitivity and without fear”.
Mr. Kharge said that the question of the caste census is not new, because Congress constantly increases it in its manifesty and parliament. In April 2023, he wrote a letter to the Prime Minister, which explained that “until we have the right data, no government can claim to provide justice to all”.
Not only statistics
“Today we have to ask what is the participation (other backward class) of the Civil Code, Dalit and Adivasi communities in the power structures of the country? Are they represented in relation to their population in the media, bureaucracy, judiciary, corporate sector and university institution? “He said.
Congress chief also repeated the attitude of the party to the implementation of Article 15 (5) of the Constitution to ensure that students, Dalit and Adivasi also receive a reservation in private educational institutions and in this respect the telangana model.
