The Gauhati High Court on Friday (October 9, 2026) granted conditional bail to Amritprabh Mahant, one of the seven accused in the death of Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg in Singapore.
The court ordered Ms. Mahant to furnish bail of ₹50,000 and barred her from leaving her hometown. The restrictions were imposed due to the ongoing investigation and trial.
Before she can be released from prison, she has to complete certain formalities before the Fast Track court (hearing the case).
The Assam Police Special Task Force arrested Ms. Mahanta, Garga’s co-singer, along with Garga’s drummer Shekharjyoti Goswami on 2 October 2025. She has been in Haflong Jail since 15 October 2025.
Ms Mahanta accompanied Garg on his trip to Singapore and was reportedly present during a yacht trip to an island near the Singapore Strait on 19 September 2025. Garg died after swimming in the sea off the island.
Other accused in the case are Shyamkanu Mahanta, the organizer of the event in Singapore, Siddhartha Sharma, Garg’s manager, Sandipan Garg, the late singer’s cousin, and Nandeswar Borah and Paresh Baishya, Garg’s personal security officers.
