The CJP urged the protesters to maintain peace, avoid violence and dangerous objects, respect barricades and keep emergency routes clear. She also recommended verifying information, staying with your group and following legal guidelines.
The protest was against the special intensive review of electoral rolls and the functioning of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The groups also demanded his resignation.
No. The Delhi Police denied the permission, citing possible serious concerns about breach of law and order and inconvenience to residents and citizens.
The CJP advised the protesters not to engage in violence or illegal activities. They should notify the designated CJP coordinator and, if safe to do so, the police.
The CJP advised staying with his group, agreeing on a meeting place and carrying identity card, necessary medicines and a charged phone. If tensions rise, leave and help vulnerable people to safety.
The organization said: “Our protest, our responsibility. Stay peaceful. Stay vigilant. Stay united.” Here is what the CJP’s 12-point guidelines say:
1. Keep calm at all times. Do not engage in violence, physical confrontations, threats or intimidation, regardless of provocation.
2. Do not damage public or private property. Vandalism, stone throwing, arson and destruction of barricades can endanger lives and undermine the purpose of the protest.
3. Do not block emergency services. Maintain clear access for ambulances, fire engines and other emergency vehicles. Do not block hospital entrances or emergency routes.
4. Do not carry weapons or dangerous objects. Avoid carrying sticks, stones, flammable materials or anything that could injure someone.
5. Do not threaten or abuse anyone. Avoid communal slurs, hate speech, threats and personal attacks against officials, police personnel, journalists or members of the public.
6. Do not force your way through the barricades. Follow legal guidelines, respect designated boundaries and do not attempt to enter restricted areas.
7. Beware of provocation and infiltration. Don’t judge people by their political affiliation or appearance. If someone promotes violence, vandalism, or illegal activity, don’t participate. Notify the designated CJP coordinator and, if safe to do so, the police.
8. Please verify before sharing. Do not spread unverified claims, misleading videos, rumors or messages intended to incite panic or hostility.
9. Record incidents responsibly. If it is safe and legal to do so, document relevant incidents without interfering with police duties, disturbing others or putting yourself at risk. Do not post unverified allegations against individuals.
10. Protect fellow protesters. If tensions rise, step back from the confrontation, alert the coordinator and help vulnerable people get to safety. Never risk a confrontation with a suspected provocateur.
11. Know your emergency contacts. Stay with your group, arrange a meeting place and carry the necessary documents, necessary medication and a charged phone.
12. Follow the legal guidelines and be aware of your rights. Stay calm when dealing with the police. Do not fight back physically. If detained, ask the reason and seek legal help.
“Remember: No individual can be allowed to hijack a peaceful protest. Our behavior must reflect our cause. A peaceful protest. Constitutional rights. Responsible citizenship,” the CJP guidelines say.
The CJP, which led the Jantar Mantar protest against Education Minister Pradhan in June-July, will stage a massive demonstration at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on October 10. Several political parties, including AAP and Left parties, are likely to join the protest.
