You’re a fast bowler, a bowler like one: Gambhir wants Mayank Yadav to stick to his guns
In T20 cricket, where batsmen are constantly looking to attack, bowlers are often forced to rely on variations to stay ahead of the game. Slower balls, cutters and changes of pace have become essential tools, but Gautam Gambhir believes there is a point when a fast bowler has to stop trying to outsmart the batsmen and trust what comes naturally.
That means fast bowling for Mayank Yadav.

The India head coach then made his expectations clear Mayank produced an impressive spell against West Indies in Ranchihe repeatedly exceeded 140 km/h and broke through the opponent’s top order in the powerplay. Gambhir’s message was simple: Mayank is a fast bowler and has to play like one.
“He’s a fast bowler, he needs to bowl like one, he’s not a slower bowler. If you can bowl 150 kmph, you bowl at 150 kmph, if you can bowl 120 kmph, bowl at that pace. When you’re a fast bowler, it’s your responsibility to bowl fast. That’s what he did and that’s why he was successful in the conference,” Gambhir said.
The comments came after Mayank put in a performance that reminded India why his pace is such a valuable weapon. After struggling to find his rhythm in Lucknow, the young pacer returned with more clarity in Ranchi, relying on his natural strengths rather than getting caught out by too many variations.
A LESSON FROM LUCK
Mayank’s previous outing was a difficult one. Although he was familiar with the conditions from his time with Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League, he struggled to make the desired impact and ended up among the most expensive bowlers in India.
Pacemaker seemed to be trying too many things, mixing up tempo and changing his lines without finding the control or efficiency he needed. In a format that rewards unpredictability, variation is important, but it can become counterproductive when a pitcher loses sight of his greatest strength.
For Mayank, the strength is his ability to generate serious pace and trouble the batsmen with the new ball.
HEAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE
In Ranchi, Mayank returned to this formula. He repeatedly topped the speed of over 140 km/h and immediately put the West Indies batting under pressure.
He struck twice in successive deliveries, removing Kamil Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer, before coming back in the final over to dismiss Rovman Powell, who looked in good form. West Indies lost three wickets in the first six overs, handing India early control of the chase.

It was a spell built on what Mayank does best: attack with pace, hit the batsmen hard and make it difficult to score before they settle down.
TRUST THE NATURAL WEAPON
Gambhir’s remarks were not necessarily a call for Mayank to abandon slower balls or other variations. Rather, they emphasized the importance of having a clear identity as a pitcher and knowing when to lean on it.
T20 cricket will continue to require adaptability, with the batsmen constantly looking for ways to disrupt the bowlers’ plans. But variation is most effective when it complements the pitcher’s primary skill rather than replacing it.
Mayank’s performance in Ranchi offered a timely reminder of that difference. He didn’t have to reappear after a tough outing in Lucknow. He needed to trust his pace, attack with the new ball and make the batsmen react to it.
That was exactly what he did. And Gambhir’s assessment captured the essence of the performance: a fast bowler’s greatest weapon may be the one he is tempted to walk away from.
