An organic mango and jackfruit festival will be held from May 29 to 31 at Nexus Center City Mall in Mysuru to create market opportunities for farmers associated with clusters formed under the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) implemented by the Horticulture Department.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Joint Director of Horticulture Manjunath Angadi said the three-day festival is aimed at promoting direct interaction between organic growers and consumers while promoting value addition in mango and jackfruit based products. A similar organic mango and jackfruit fair organized at Lalbagh in Bengaluru from May 23 to 25 has received an encouraging response, he added.
In addition to fresh mangoes and jackfruits, the sales exhibition will feature a range of organic products, offering farmers the opportunity to directly sell organically grown produce to visitors.
Live demonstrations of the preparation of mango and jackfruit specialties will be organized to allow visitors to sample and purchase the products. Traditional foods and snacks prepared by farming families from different regions of the state will also be on display and for sale.
The event will also showcase clothing and artwork made using organic and natural dyes. Demonstrations of manufacturing techniques, storage practices and processing methods related to the raw materials used in such products are also planned.
Workshops on urban gardening and natural soap making will be conducted to train participants in growing native plant varieties in home gardens and making soaps and detergents from natural ingredients.
President of the Organic Society Dr. Ramakrishna said the exhibition will showcase more than 80 local and exotic varieties of mango and more than 35 varieties of jackfruit. Visitors, especially the younger generation, will learn about the variety of mango and jackfruit varieties found across Karnataka, the methods of identification and the conservation efforts being made by farmers.
The exhibition will also focus on the distinct characteristics of individual varieties, their climatic suitability and naturally ripened fruits. Special attractions include the ‘Tipu Bada Bagh’ mangoes and the variety of jackfruits from Alur.
“Our Farmers Market” member Kavitha Srinivasan said children will be encouraged to participate in drawing activities focused on natural farming, environmental protection and livestock farming. Demonstrations of traditional pottery production will also be organized with the aim of drawing attention to the way of livelihood in the countryside.
As part of the children’s programme, the play ‘Pippigondu Pappi’ written and directed by theater personality Prasanna Heggodu will be staged by the Indian Institute of Education on Saturday from 19:00 to 20:00.
