Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan has directed the Census officials in Andhra Pradesh to complete the second phase of Census 2027 with accuracy, quality and strict adherence to deadlines to ensure that no household or individual is left behind.
Addressing the state-wide conference of Chief Enumerators at the Andhra Pradesh Secretariat on Friday (October 9, 2026), he lauded the state government for successfully completing the first phase, which included house inventory and house enumeration, and urged the officials to maintain the same commitment during the population census.
The 2027 census will be the eighth since independence and the 16th overall. Population data, collected for the first time since 2011, will form the basis for development planning, delimitation of constituencies, allocation of central funds and formulation of welfare systems. The second phase will collect information at the individual level through a 40-question questionnaire.
Officials must treat sensitive topics including religion, caste, disability and occupation with respect and record information accurately, he said. Personal information provided by respondents will remain confidential under the Census Act, 1948. Mr. Narayan emphasized the importance of three-stage training for enumerators and supervisors, public awareness campaigns to encourage self-enumeration and careful delineation of enumeration blocks to avoid omissions and duplication.
Digital tools, mobile applications and the Census Management and Monitoring System will support data collection and progress tracking.
Chief Secretary G. Sai Prasad called for a comprehensive action plan to complete the enumeration in the stipulated 55 days. He advised District Collectors to prioritize targets, conduct day-to-day inspections and expeditiously address backlogs in under-performing mandals and administrative units in the first 15 to 25 days.
Special Chief Secretary and Nodal Officer of State Shamsher Singh Rawat said Andhra Pradesh has deployed 84,115 enumerators and 13,887 supervisors in 94,983 enumeration blocks during the first phase, which ran from May 1 to 31, 2026. He called for accelerated training and wider support for self-service digital platform institutions rather than wider support for education and digital platform institutions. own enumeration to the subsequent process was previously about 13%.
Census Chief Operating Officer J. Nivas said the conference would help officials clarify procedures and effectively prepare for the second phase. The meeting was attended by district collectors, municipal commissioners and senior officials from various departments.
