Delhi liquor stores open or closed tomorrow? Check Govt Ordinance Amid CJP Jantar Mantar Protest Call Against CEC | Today’s news
Retail liquor shops in Delhi will remain closed on Saturday, October 10 following a government order issued as a precautionary measure amid heightened political activity and a planned protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
The ordinance orders the closure of all liquor retail outlets in Delhi on October 9 and 10. An official circular said the action was prompted by the prevailing situation and information shared by the Delhi Police.
“In view of the prevailing situation and intimations received from the Delhi Police, as a precautionary measure aimed at maintaining public order, it is hereby ordered that all retail liquor shops having license in form L6, L6 & L6FG, L8, L10 and L8 & L14 operating in Delhi shall be completely closed on 09.10.2026 and 206.10,” the ANI circular said 206.1.
The shutdown also came amid demonstrations by the INDIA bloc over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of electoral rolls, with opposition leaders also demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other leaders of the INDIA bloc gathered at Raj Ghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on Thursday, as the protest campaign entered its third consecutive day.
Congress general secretary (organization) KC Venugopal termed the agitation as “one of the strongest” protests and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of “finishing off” democracy through Gyanesh Kumar.
Earlier, leaders of the INDIA bloc attempted to march to the Election Commission headquarters on Tuesday and staged a demonstration near Jantar Mantar the next day. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other opposition leaders were detained during Wednesday’s protest.
The Delhi Police filed three FIRs related to the demonstration, citing alleged offenses that include assaults on police personnel, obstruction of government work, pushing, tampering and police misconduct. The details of the FIR released so far also mention Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
CJP will hold a protest in Delhi on October 10
The CJP has planned a youth-led demonstration at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, raising allegations of “vote theft”, alleged exclusion of youth voters from electoral rolls and other issues related to the Election Commission.
CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das said the party had informed the Delhi Police about the planned rally and had completed the necessary formalities. According to him, the participation of young participants from different parts of the country is expected.
Delhi Police denied CJP permission for Jantar Mantar protest
However, the Delhi Police refused to allow the CJP’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10. Following the decision, Union Home Minister Govind Mohan instructed police chiefs in all states and Union Territories to ensure law and order and tighten security measures.
In an official statement, Mohan asked the states and Union Territories to coordinate with the Delhi Police and take preventive steps against the proposed mobilization. The letter raised fears that CJP members and supporters might try to enter the national capital despite the denial of permission.
