Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy will hold a special meeting with ministers on October 12 to review the impact of El Nino and the prevailing rainfall deficit in Telangana, focusing on relief measures for farmers and steps to address new water and power demands.

Key issues

The meeting is expected to review the conditions in the deficient rainfall areas, difficulties faced by farmers and immediate interventions needed to mitigate the impact of the drought. Agriculture, irrigation, drinking water supply and the growing demand for electricity will be among the key topics on the agenda.

The move comes after a wide-ranging discussion on the rainfall deficit in the recent state cabinet meeting. According to official estimates quoted by the government, Telangana recorded 17% less than normal rainfall with drought-like conditions prevailing in nearly 235 mandals.

The state government has already passed a resolution in the legislature urging the Center to declare drought-affected mandals and provide adequate financial assistance. It also sought a special package of Rs. 20,000 crore to help the state deal with the impact of deficient rainfall.

Tuesday’s meeting is likely to examine the action plan prepared by the Cabinet sub-committee on drought mitigation, along with relief measures to be taken in the rain-deficient areas. The discussions are also expected to feature proposals from political parties, consultations with farmers’ organizations and contributions from experts from various sectors.
