The Union Finance Ministry on Wednesday (May 27, 2026) cleared a major staff restructuring of the Enforcement Directorate, expanding its current strength by nearly 60% from 2,029 to 3,256 posts. The agency’s executive staff will almost double from 1,229 to 2,288 positions.
The most dramatic changes were approved in the executive staff, which forms the operational backbone of the ED. While the number of special directors remains unchanged at seven, the number of other directors has increased from 10 to 24; by joint directors from 28 to 49 years; and Deputy Directors from 148 to 267.
The number of assistant directors allowed was revised from 255 to 531, more than double the previous number; enforcers from 355 to 606; and assistant enforcement officers from 425 to 803, nearly doubling the number of approved positions. These three contributions are central to the investigation.
Legal staff strengthened
The legal staff of the ED, which provides prosecution and legal advice, has also been strengthened. The number of additional directors (prosecutions) was increased from one to seven; deputy legal adviser from 7 to 18 years; and assistant legal advisers from 18 to 36 years old.
A decision making wing has been re-created which earlier had only one special director at director level. The newly approved positions include two additional directors; three joint directors; five deputy directors; and 10 assistant directors.
Salary levels have been revised in the systems staff, which includes one systems analyst and 11 scientific technical assistants.
A new position of internal financial adviser was created on the ministerial staff and assistant directors increased from three to six; superintendents from 20 to 30; older translators remain unchanged at seven; and assistants increased from 57 to 65.
The security cadre includes posts of head sepoy, revised from 209 to 273 personnel; and sepoys, unchanged at 70.
