PSL 2027 to clash with IPL again as PCB locks dates; The BCCI is also looking at early March
The Pakistan Super League is heading for another scheduling clash with the Indian Premier League. The Pakistan Cricket Board on Thursday confirmed that PSL 12 will begin on March 18, 2027 and run until May 2, putting the tournament in a potential clash with IPL 2027 for the second consecutive season. The eight-team PSL, which expanded from six teams this year, will retain its current format, with the final scheduled for May 2. While the IPL 2027 schedule has yet to be officially announced, it suggests that its 20th season could also begin around mid-March, raising the prospect of the two major T20 leagues once again competing for players, viewers and global attention.
The IPL-PSL clash is looming once again
Overlapping schedules could again cause headaches for both leagues, with the IPL also looking at an earlier start in 2027. IPL Board of Governors chairman Arun Dhumal had earlier indicated that the BCCI was considering an early March start with the aim of completing the tournament by mid-May.“This year the IPL started around March 29 (28) and ended on May 31,” Saikia told PTI. “The only thing we are discussing is that during the freak end of the tournament after May 15… there is concern that it will rain or that the pre-monsoon season will start. On the other hand, there is hot weather which is not very favorable for the players or the crowds.”“That is why there is a discussion going on within the BCCI as well as our IPL Governing Council as to whether we can start the tournament a little earlier than the end of March.“We will try from next year onwards and I have already instructed our General Manager (Game Development) (former India fast bowler Abey Kuruvilla) to look for windows to see if we can start it by March 10 and wrap it up by May 15. So that there is no adverse weather conditions before the play-offs and finals of the 27th IPL, which will be added in 2002.
Another season, another IPL-PSL tussle
The schedule overlap could prove particularly significant following the events of the previous season, when several overseas players backed out of PSL commitments before joining IPL franchises as substitutes.Among them was Australian pacer Spencer Johnson, who was signed outright by Quetta Gladiators citing personal reasons before opting out and subsequently joining Chennai Super Kings as a replacement for Nathan Ellis.Dasun Shanaka of Sri Lanka, who was signed by Lahore Qalandars, also joined Rajasthan Royals as a replacement, while Zimbabwean pacer Blessing Muzarabani opted out of his contract with Islamabad United and joined Kolkata Knight Riders. Muzarabani was subsequently banned from the PSL for two years.
PSL 2027 window locked
The window from 18 March to 2 May was finalized after consultation with franchises and other stakeholders during the PSL Governing Council meeting in London on 1 September. The PSL will enter its second season with eight teams, following the Hyderabad Kingsmen and the expansion of the competition in 2026. The previous season also marked another major shift, with auctions replacing the traditional player draft for the first time.Peshawar Zalmi ended their nine-year wait for the 2026 PSL title by defeating debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen in the final at the Gaddafi Stadium. The match attracted a record 32,461 spectators.PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said the league will look to build on the momentum created in the previous season.“PSL 11 showed the world what this league is capable of, thrilling moments that brought the entire nation to mind, record crowds, record broadcasts,” Naqvi said.“PSL 12 will raise the bar even higher. We are determined to deliver another outstanding season and look forward to seeing all eight franchises compete for the title again,” he added.
