Nana Patekar is to be given a state funeral, Maharashtra Minister Ashish Shelar confirms. Today’s news

Veteran actor Nana Patekar will be given a state funeral in recognition of his contribution to Marathi theater and Marathi and Hindi cinema, Maharashtra Culture Minister Ashish Shelar announced on Thursday.

Patekar died at the age of 75 after suffering a massive cardiac arrest in Goa. News of his death drew tributes from the film industry and political leaders.

Nana Patekar to receive full state honours

Announcing the decision, Shelar said the actor’s last rites would be performed with full state honours.

In a post on X, Ashish Shelar wrote, “Keeping in mind actor Nana Patekar’s unique contribution to Marathi plays as well as Marathi and Hindi cinema, we have decided to perform his last rites ‘with full state honours’.

Shelar also spoke to the media after Patekar’s death and expressed his condolences.

“The passing away of Nana Patekar ji is a deep loss to the art world. He emerged from the lanes of Yeola and through the power of his talent and perseverance carved out his own identity in Marathi theatre, Marathi and Hindi. As he passes away, my deepest condolences from me, the Government of Maharashtra and the Ministry of Culture.”

Nana Patekar died after cardiac arrest

Patekar suffered a severe cardiac arrest at his residence in Goa and was subsequently rushed to Manipal Hospital. Doctors tried to revive him for about 45 minutes but could not save him.

Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Head of Oncology at Manipal Hospital, confirmed the actor’s death to ANI.

According to Dr. Salkar, Patekar texted a friend at around 2.30 am that he was not feeling well. The friend later arrived at his residence around 4:00 AM.

Film career of Nana Patekar

Patekar was among the prominent actors in Hindi and Marathi. He made his acting debut with the 1978 film Gaman and went on to earn recognition for his performances in films like Parinda, Prahar, Angaar, Krantiveer, Tiranga, Khamoshi and Ab Tak Chhappan.

His career spanned several decades and included work across various genres and languages.

Patekar has continued to appear in films in recent years. He was a part of Housefull 5 starring Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh and others.

The actor also appeared as a police officer in Vishal Bhardwaj’s O’Romeo starring Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri.

Patekar also had a cameo in the film Subedar starring Anil Kapoor and Radhika Madan.
