History to last forever: Ronaldo pays tribute to Messi after Argentina farewell
Cristiano Ronaldo paid the ultimate tribute to Lionel Messi after the Argentine superstar played his final game for the national team on Tuesday 6 October. Messi played for the Albiceleste against Benin at the Monumental in his international football swan song, score a goal and set up two assists.
Once the match was over, Messi posted a long post on Instagram saying that he already misses wearing the Argentina shirt. The 39-year-old said the time was right for him to step on from the national team and pay tribute to his family and teammates.
Messi also fondly remembered the late great Diego Maradona, saying the football icon was the one who helped make Argentina a force in the sport.
Many current and retired footballers have paid tribute to Messi, with Ronaldo leading the way with a touching message to his one-time rival on the pitch.
The Portuguese star responded to the post saying the history created by Messi will live on forever and also sent him a hug.
“Leo, you have defended your country for so many years and a history that will last forever. My respect for what you have achieved with Argentina. Hugs,” Ronaldo said. (Credit: Lionel Messi Instagram)
It wasn’t the first time Ronaldo sent Messi a message on Instagram. He offered his condolences and support to the Argentine star after his father Jorge, he died in August.
RONALDO VS MESSI: THE RIVALRY THAT DEFINED SOCCER
The Ronaldo vs Messi rivalry is widely regarded as the rivalry that has defined football in the modern era. The rivalry began in 2007 when both men battled Kaka for the Ballon d’Or.
Since then, for the next 10 years, the two have shared every FIFA Best Player and Ballon d’Or award. The rivalry gained momentum when Ronaldo joined Real Madrid and went up against Messi’s Barcelona in Spain, with each El Clasico considered the premier game of club football.
Despite their rivalry, the two men have always shown respect for each other on and off the field.
On the international stage, the two men faced each other twice and split one victory each.
