GUWAHATI:
About 76% of around 19.05,050,000 voters cast their ballots for the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency in central Assam on Tuesday (October 6, 2026).
State election officials said the final vote percentage was expected to increase as people who entered polling stations before 5 p.m. were allowed to exercise their right to vote.
The bypoll was necessitated after Pradyut Bordoloi, who had won the constituency for a second term in 2024, quit the Congress to contest the Dispur Assembly seat and won the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Assembly seat.
Fifteen candidates are contesting from the Nagaon parliamentary constituency, which consists of eight assembly segments in Morigaon and Nagaon districts. However, the contest is expected to be primarily between BJP’s Devasish Sharma, a former bureaucrat; Congress’s Sibamoni Bora, former MLA; and All India United Democratic Front chief Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal, MLA and three-time former MP.
All three exuded confidence in winning the seat.
Apart from a minor confrontation over alleged vote-switching at a polling station in Nagaon Juria district, the election was largely peaceful.
Leaders of opposition parties, including Mr. Ajmal and Congress MP for Dhubri Rakibul Hussain, alleged that unknown people had entered several polling booths. He also accused the BJP of trying to rig the elections.
The counting of votes is scheduled for October 9.
