Gautam Gambhir has a farewell message for Agakar’s critics for the selector
Indian cricket team coach Gautam Gambhir paid a touching tribute to outgoing BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar after his tenure officially ended. The BCCI has formally started the appointment of a new member to its men’s selection committee, inviting applications for the post left vacant by Ajit Agarkar.
The governing body published the application notice on Tuesday, just 48 hours after Agarkar’s term as chairman ended on October 4. Agarkar has headed the senior men’s selection committee since taking charge in July 2023, but reports suggested he was not interested in an extension.
While the BCCI is yet to release an official statement regarding Agarkar’s exit specifically, it has now opened a selection process for a vacancy in its five-member men’s selection committee. Gambhir became the coach of the Indian team during Agarkar’s tenure and the two men worked hand in hand to win the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup.
When the Indian coach was taking X, he said it was an absolute honor to work with him. Gambhir tipped his hat to Agarkar for keeping the Indian team ahead and taunted his critics that history would remember him kindly.
“Dear Ajit Bhai, It is an absolute honor to work with you. These 3 ICC trophies are a testament to your belief: Team first and team always first. I must say history will be kinder to you. Thank you for everything. I wish you all the best in your future endeavours!!” said Gambhir on X. (Credit: Gautam Gambhir X)
AGARKAR’S TIME AS CHIEF SELECTOR
Agarkar took charge of India’s senior men’s selection committee on 4 July 2023 and remained in the role of chairman for just over three years before his tenure ended in October 2026. His tenure coincided with a highly successful period for Indian cricket, with the team lifting three ICC trophies, the 2024 T202 World Cup and the 2024 T206 World Cup, the Champ00 cup.
However, Agarkar also received flogging from fans who assumed that he played a role in overshadowing the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The former BCCI coach was criticized on social media as many felt he had pushed Kohli and Rohit out of Test cricket.
