Thieves make off with 30 sovereigns of gold, ₹5 lakh in Ranipet

Thieves decamped with 30 sovereigns of gold jewellery, 1 kg of silver articles and about ₹5,000 in cash from the house of a former railway officer in Arakkonam town on Tuesday.

Police said the victim, Moindeen Sharif, 68, was a former railway official.

Initial investigation revealed that Moindeen along with family members had gone to visit his son in Chennai for a week. When he returned, he found broken wardrobes in the living room and bedroom.

Police said gold ornaments and cash that were in the cupboards were missing. The back door of the house was also damaged. After being informed, the Arakkonam city police inspected the spot.

CCTV cameras in the house and along the route were used to identify the suspects. A case has been registered. Special teams have been formed to nab the suspects. A probe is underway.
