New additions likely in CPI(M) Kozhikode district committee

At least some new additions are likely in the district leadership of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) in Kozhikode as a two-day extended district committee meeting began at the AKG auditorium in the city on Tuesday (October 6).

According to party sources, TK Sumesh, Regional Secretary, Balussery; TK Chandran, Regional Secretary, Koyilandy; K. Ajayakumar, Regional Secretary, Kozhikode City; and PKE Chandran, Area Secretary, Kakkodi, may be included in the District Committee as standing invitees. Some of the district functionaries of the Indian Democratic Youth Federation could also find a berth there. Senior leader C. Bhaskaran is likely to be relieved of his post in the district secretariat due to his advancing age. It was learned that some new leaders could also be added to the district secretariat.

Leader of the Opposition and member of the party’s political bureau Pinarayi Vijayan opened the meeting of the expanded district committee in the morning. Central committee members EP Jayarajan, KK Shailaja, P. Sathidevi, CS Sujatha and TP Ramakrishnan are participating along with state secretariat members such as V. Sivankutty, PA Mohamed Riyas and CN Mohanan.

Attacking the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government, Mr Vijayan alleged that the agenda of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the BJP had been implemented in the state. He also alleged that Gyanesh Kumar, the Chief Election Commissioner, was “protected” by the UDF when it was in power earlier. The meeting passed a resolution against the BJP-led government at the Center for using the Enforcement Directorate to target opposition party leaders, journalists, activists and independent intellectuals.

The resolution claimed that the agency had sent a letter to the state police chief seeking a First Information Report (FIR) against Mr. Vijayan and Mr. Riyas in the CMRL-Exalogic pay case as raids conducted at their residences did not yield any evidence implicating them.

Discussion

The delegates engaged in group discussions on the organizational report prepared by the party’s district secretary M. Mehboob later in the day. This was followed by an open debate of the selected delegates, which will continue on Wednesday (October 7). The meeting will conclude with Mr. Mehboob’s response to these remarks and a possible announcement regarding management changes.
