Travel fatigue left no time to think, an excited Shreyas Iyer took advantage of it
Shreyas Iyer hardly knew where he was when he reached Lucknow. He had been part of the Indian team that won gold in men’s cricket at the Asian Games three days earlier and had no time to settle down before his next international engagement after a grueling journey back.
There was barely enough time to think about the conditions, let alone the fatigue.
Maybe it was just what he needed.

A few hours later, Iyer departed unbeaten on 102, making his first T20I century and leading India to an eight-wicket win over the West Indies in the opening match of the series.
“Jubilant” was the word Iyer chose to describe his performance. It means elated and immensely satisfied, an apt description for a night where a few hectic days gave way to the biggest individual milestone of his T20I career.
“I was actually thinking about getting my first century and it came out,” Iyer said at the post-match presentation. “I definitely want to say that dreams do come true.

THREE DAYS, TWO CHALLENGES
The past few days have been much more than just travel. Iyer has just returned from the Asian Games, where India secured the gold medal in men’s cricket on October 3. On 6 October, he was back in national colors leading India in a different format.
Still, he refused to let the circumstances become an excuse.

Instead, Iyer quickly adapted to the wicket and the conditions. With India reduced to 35 for two in four overs, the skipper had another problem to solve.
He solved it with a bat in hand.
IYER takes responsibility
Abhishek Sharma fell for 21 in the third over, brilliantly caught by Shimron Hetmyer at long off, before Sanju Samson departed for 11 in the following over. India lost both their openers and suddenly the onus was on Iyer to sustain the chase.
He did much more than that.
Iyer and Ishan Kishan put together an unbeaten 137-run partnership for the third wicket to take India from initial uncertainty to complete control. Ishan played a supporting role while Iyer increasingly took the lead.

The captain found boundaries all around the ground, combining classic move play with increasing aggression. A six off Shamar Springer’s long off was followed by a maximum against Akeal Hosein.
The fatigue from the trip was not visible. So were concerns about the conditions.
Iyer simply settled into the innings and once he found his rhythm, the acceleration came naturally.
THE MOMENT IS COMING
The century arrived in spectacular fashion.
Iyer went behind Roston Chase and dropped the ball straight over long-on for six to reach his hundred off 42 balls. It was an innings that combined elegance and aggression and turned the Indian chase into a parade.
It was also a record-breaking hit.
Iyer’s unbeaten 102 became the highest score by an Indian captain batting at number two in T20Is, surpassing Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 94 against West Indies in Hyderabad in 2019.
There was another remarkable number. Iyer’s last two T20 innings at this venue are both unbeaten hundreds. His previous knock at this venue came during IPL 2026 against Lucknow Supergiants during the league stages.

But his hundred was just one part of India’s dominant night.
Earlier, debutant Naman Dhir declared himself with three wickets. His off-spin produced figures of 3/31 while Kuldeep Yadav took 2/33 as India restricted West Indies to 171.
Iyer was impressed by Dhir’s willingness to pounce at crucial moments.
“He realized that the ball was spinning and then he took advantage of that,” the India captain said. “Such a commendable performance from him and I love his attitude.
NO ROOM FOR EXCUSES
India reached 172 for two in just 14.4 overs, extending their winning streak to 10 consecutive T20Is.
For Iyer, however, the evening had a more personal meaning.
Coming back from an Asian Games triumph, he endured a hectic turnaround and arrived in Lucknow without the luxury of a long preparation time. He admitted that he didn’t even really realize where he was on the way.
Then he left to lead India.
He had his first T20I hundred a few hours later.
Circumstances could easily have provided reasons for a difficult evening. Instead, Iyer and India chose not to make excuses. He adapted to the conditions, responded to the early wickets and eventually took the game away from the West Indies.
There was something snug about the way this milestone arrived. Iyer was thinking about his maiden T201 century. When the opportunity presented itself, he made sure he couldn’t escape.
“Winning definitely tastes different,” he said.
One night when the journey was exhausting, Iyer’s mind remained clear. When he left the field, he had every reason to be happy.
