World number one Jannik Sinner ends the 2026 season after a crucial knee injury decision
World number one Jannik Sinner will miss the rest of the 2026 season as he continues to deal with a knee injury that has kept him out of action since his Wimbledon triumph in July.
Sinner hasn’t played since defeated Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final July 12th. The 25-year-old subsequently missed the North American hard-court swing, including the US Open, before sitting out the Asian swing as well.
The Italian confirmed on Tuesday that he will undergo further treatment on his knee after consulting his doctors. “Together with the doctors, we have decided that I need treatment for the knee, which means that the 2026 season is officially over,” Sinner said in a video posted on X.
Sinner admitted that this decision will make the end of his year significantly different from the previous two seasons, when he celebrated success at the ATP Finals in Turin.
“The last few years, especially the end in Turin, have given me so many beautiful feelings and emotions that this year will be completely different,” he said.
“But at the moment I also need to think about my long-term career. So I will do everything to get back to 100 percent.”
Sinner’s team said he would undergo treatment for inflammation in his knee and decided to give him plenty of time to recover before starting preparations for the 2027 season.
The injury has sidelined Sinner from European indoor hard court tournaments and the ATP Finals in Turin, where he has won the title the past two years.
His absence could also affect the race for first place. Zverev, who is ranked second in the ATP rankings, closed the gap on Sinner and will have further opportunities to gain points during the final tournaments of the season.
Sinner will now have to wait until 2027 to return to competitive tennis, with the Australian Open scheduled to begin in January.
The Italian’s priority will be to fully recover from his knee problem before starting preparations for the new season.
