Students of the Kozhikode Government Medical College still bear the brunt of inadequate hostel facilities.

According to officials of the student union at the university, female students are the worst affected. Although the construction of the two new hostel buildings is almost complete, they have yet to be opened. It is learned that the authorities are awaiting permission from the Ministry of Health to install the furniture and connect the water supply.

Currently, there are three hostels for Undergraduate (UG) boys and two for UG girls. Some female students are also housed in quarters intended for senior resident physicians. House surgeons have a separate building of quarters. According to the current practice, when a new batch of students arrives, their predecessors are supposed to vacate their existing rooms in the hostel. Quite often, however, these students do not immediately receive rooms to move into. This is because the hostel facilities are not being modernized in line with the increase in the number of students over the years, say student union officials.

Hiba Yasmi, a 69th batch MBBS student who is in the second year of her course, says a large number of students from her batch are yet to get hostel accommodation. Almost half of the students from her batch recently couldn’t attend the graduation of the 64th batch because they didn’t have a place to live, she says.

Gayathri, who belongs to the last (70th) batch, says that almost 50 students from her batch did not get hostel facilities. “The annual campus hostel fee is ₹12,000. But now we are forced to stay in private hostels for ₹6,000 a month. Traveling to the campus is a pain,” he says.

Officials of the Students’ Federation of India say the government is yet to clear the files related to the purchase of furniture for the new buildings, although a price estimate for the purpose was submitted as early as May. Meanwhile, college managements say steps are being taken to address students’ concerns.
