Amid protests against the SIR, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday (Oct 5, 2026) said identifying ineligible names illegally included in the electoral roll and removing them is essential for India’s security and unity.

While noting that India has been a custodian of democratic values ​​for centuries, Adityanath asserted that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise was an important effort to further strengthen the country’s democratic legacy.

“Identification of ineligible names illegally included in the electoral roll and their removal as per rules is essential for India’s security, unity and integrity,” he said in a post on X.

The Chief Minister said that it is necessary to verify the records relating to deceased persons, permanently shifted and duplicate records.

He also called on all those who have reached the age of 18 to enter their names in the voters’ list.
