Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) official was arrested for accusing an attempt to assassinate the restaurant owner near the Khajapettai bus booth. The defendant A. Sairam alias Sekar, 58, from Sangiliandapuram, was sent to custody. He was the Secretary of the Palakkarai BJP zone, the police said.
Police sources said Siram came to the restaurant on the night of May 16 and reportedly argued with its owner B. Selvakumar, 61, why he hung a portrait of Periyar in Outlet.
Siam reportedly abused and hit Selvakumara with hotbox on his head and caused injury. Selvakumar was admitted to the Mahatma Gandhi memorial government hospital.
Palakkarai, who acted on a complaint on 17 May since Selvakumar, registered the Palakarai Police according to Section 109 BNS (Murder Attempted) and several other sections, added sources.
