A case registered over a Facebook post falsely attributed to Sudhakaran

The Kannur Cyber Crime Police has registered a case and initiated an investigation against the Facebook account owner for allegedly circulating a fake post with the photo and name of Congress leader and Kannur MP K. Sudhakaran.

A case was registered against Rajeev PR Rajeev, owner of a Facebook account with the same name. The post reportedly gave the impression that Mr. Sudhakaran had said that Chief Minister VD Satheesan should be removed from office immediately, otherwise the situation would reach a stage where people would throw rotten eggs at him.

According to the FIR, the fabricated post was circulated in a manner suggesting that the statement was made by Mr. Sudhakaran himself. Police said the alleged act was aimed at insulting and defaming the MP and creating unrest among the public and Congress workers.

The case was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by Mr. Sudhakaran and received by email from the Kerala Police Headquarters. Cyber crime inspector KV Mahesh is leading the investigation.

The alleged false statement sparked a controversy with social media posts attributing the Chief Minister’s criticism to Mr. Sudhakaran.

After learning that a false statement against the Chief Minister was being circulated in his name, Mr. Sudhakaran approached the Home Minister for action and asked that the source of the alleged misinformation be traced.

Mr. Sudhakaran said that the reports and posters circulated as his statement against the Chief Minister were baseless and factually incorrect. He argued that such campaigns were deliberate attempts to deceive the public and carry out personal attacks.

He argued that spreading fake news and engaging in personal defamation cannot be justified as political activity or under the guise of freedom of expression and called for strong action against those responsible.
