KIMS Saveera performs advanced surgery to treat a woman with a coronary clot in her heart

Doctors at KIMS Saveera Hospital in Anantapur treated a 60-year-old woman who suffered a massive heart attack caused by a massive blood clot that completely blocked a major coronary artery. The medical team used an advanced mechanical thrombectomy technique involving the CATRx catheter and the Penumbra aspiration thrombectomy system after conventional methods of clot removal failed to restore adequate blood flow.

A woman, R. Annapurna, from Guntakal in Anantapur district, visited the hospital with symptoms of an acute heart attack. An electrocardiogram (ECG) and other tests confirmed an inferior wall myocardial infarction (IWMI), which indicates a heart attack involving the lower part of the heart.

An emergency coronary angiogram revealed that the patient’s coronary arteries were abnormally enlarged, a condition known as coronary artery ectasia. The right coronary artery (RCA), the main blood vessel supplying the heart, was completely blocked by a large blood clot.

Doctors connected the CATRx catheter to the Penumbra Aspiration Thrombectomy System and performed repeated aspiration to remove the extensive clot clogging the artery. This allowed the clot to be effectively removed and greatly improved blood flow. After clot extraction, balloon angioplasty was performed and two coronary stents were inserted into the affected segment to restore and maintain blood flow.

A subsequent angiogram confirmed successful restoration of blood circulation and achieved TIMI grade 3 flow, indicating normal blood flow through the treated coronary artery. The stents were adequately expanded and no significant procedural complications were observed.
