The Center on Monday announced the appointment of three Chief Justices as Supreme Court judges.

The three judges elevated to the apex court are Justice Sunita Agarwal, Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court; Justice DK Upadhyay, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court; and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, informed the Bar and Bench.

The appointment follows the recommendation of the Supreme Collegium dated 28 September. With the three new appointments, the Supreme Court will now have 37 judges, up from the 38 that was approved.

Who is Judge Sunita Agarwal?

Justice Sunita Agarwal, who belongs to the cadre of Allahabad High Court, is serving as the Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court from July 2023.

She completed her law degree from the University of Awadh in 1989 and entered legal practice in December 1990. She was elevated to the bench in November 2011. Justice Agarwal is scheduled to retire from the Supreme Court in April 2031.

Who is Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh?

Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh completed his law degree from the University of Delhi and enrolled as an advocate in 1990. He first practiced in the Patna High Court for ten years before moving to the Jharkhand High Court where he continued his legal practice until he was elevated to the bench in 2012.

He served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court from 20 December 2022 to 19 February 2023. Subsequently, on 17 April 2023, he assumed the post of Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court. Justice Singh was later transferred to the Telangana High Court and was sworn in as its Chief Justice 2025 on 19 July.

Who is Justice DK Upadhyay?

Justice DK Upadhyay went on to study law at Lucknow University and enrolled as an advocate in May 1991.

He started his legal career working in the chambers of his father, RA Upadhyay, who worked before the Revenue Department for about six decades. He also worked with senior advocates Mohd Arif Khan and SK Kalia.

His practice has primarily focused on civil and constitutional matters before the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court.

Upadhyay served as the Chief Standing Counsel of Uttar Pradesh from May 2007 until his elevation as a judge in November 2011.

He became the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court in July 2023 before being transferred to the Delhi High Court, where he assumed the post of Chief Justice in January 2025.
