Five Assembly constituencies in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and one Lok Sabha seat in Assam are heading for by-elections. The by-elections were necessitated after the resignation of elected legislators in all the three states and the Union Territory for various reasons. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming surveys:

When are the elections?

Elections for all six seats will be held on 6 October 2026. The nomination process was closed on 16 September and the election process is expected to be completed by 11 October.

When will the results be announced?

Counting of votes will take place on October 9.

Which seats face the detours?

Madurantakam and Dharapuram constituencies in Tamil Nadu, Thattanchavady constituencies in Puducherry, Rejinagar and Nandigram in West Bengal along with Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency in Assam go to the polls on Tuesday.

Why are elections held?

In Tamil Nadu, after the resignations of Maragatham Kumaravel and P. Sathyabama, vacancies arose in Madurantakam and Dharapuram.

In Puducherry, the Thattanchavady constituency opened after the resignation of Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, who retained the Mangalam constituency.

In Rejinagar and Nandigram in West Bengal, it is because of the resignation of Humayun Kabir and Chief Minister Suvenda Adhikari.
