Two pregnant women died at Bihar’s Jamui Sadar Hospital on Sunday (October 4, 2026) due to non-availability of doctors. The family members accused the doctor of negligence and staged a protest by placing the bodies at the main gate of the hospital.
There was tension after Bihar minister and Jamui MLA Shreyasi Singh went to the hospital and criticized the hospital management, a video of which went viral.
In both cases, the family members alleged that the doctor on duty was not present and timely medical treatment was not provided. One woman died before giving birth, while the other died after surgery.
Angry family members placed the bodies at the main gate of the hospital and demanded action against the doctors responsible.
One of the deceased, Anita Kumari, 28, was initially taken to the primary health center on Saturday evening (October 3) after labor pains, from where she was referred to Sadar Hospital, family members said.
Anita was brought to Sadar Hospital around 11:00 PM where no doctor was present in the delivery room. Paramedics told family members that a doctor would arrive after an initial assessment, but the woman’s condition continued to deteriorate throughout the night. She died on Sunday around five o’clock in the morning.
Aastha Kumari (26) of Chauhandih village died after giving birth to a baby boy. Her condition was stabilized after the operation, but around midnight her condition worsened. The family claimed that the doctor was not present on duty. Although her condition improved briefly after being treated by a doctor in the emergency room, her condition deteriorated again on Sunday morning and she died around 10 o’clock.
The family alleged that Aastha was not receiving regular medical follow-up after the surgery. A blood transfusion was suggested in the morning, but she died before blood could be secured.
A family member said Aastho’s husband Ratan Singh had died in a road accident about four months ago and the newborn son had now also lost his mother.
According to the hospital authorities, Dr. Shalini was on duty from Saturday 8:00 pm to Sunday 8:00 am, but according to family members, she was absent from duty throughout the night.
He asks for an explanation
Jamui MLA Mrs. Singh blamed the doctors and asked about the lady doctor who was not present in the hospital premises. She first met the affected family members and then demanded an explanation from the hospital’s deputy superintendent, Dr Thanish Kumar.
A video of the MLA shouting at the hospital management went viral where she was seen questioning why the patient’s critical condition was not treated seriously.
In the video, the minister also raised questions about Dr Shalini’s absence and asked why the concerned doctor was not called, saying patients require medical supervision even at midnight.
Ms. Singh said strict action must be taken against doctors found guilty. She said she would also speak to Health Minister Nishant Kumar and Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on the matter. Later, Ms. Singh met the District Magistrate, who informed her that a three-member committee headed by the Deputy Development Commissioner had been formed to conduct an inquiry and submit its report within 24 hours.
