Restaurant rent dispute spills over into Madhapur road, cases booked against both parties

An owner-tenant dispute involving the Lucky restaurant in Madhapur escalated into alleged damage to the business, assault and threats, followed by a road protest that led to separate cases against both parties.

Mohammed Mansoor Ali, who told the police that he had been running a restaurant near Pillar No. 1723 for the past six years, claimed that parts of the premises were damaged using an earth-moving machine on October 3.

According to his complaint, Mansoor received a call from his worker Ali informing him that some persons were damaging the restaurant. Mansoor and his wife Rehana Begum rushed to the spot where they allegedly found the owners Hari, Ravi and others, including some women, damaging parts of the premises with an earthmoving machine.

The pans, tea room and bakery were reportedly damaged. When the pair tried to intervene, the group allegedly abused and threatened them. Some of the women in the group allegedly assaulted Rehana Begum, police said.

Mansoor further claimed that the group obstructed him and tried to snatch his mobile phone when he was trying to record the incident. Based on his complaint, the Madhapur police registered a case against the building owners and others.

Police said the dispute stemmed from renting space and paying rent. Mansoor has reportedly not paid the rent for the past few months, leading to rifts with Ravi, Hari and others. The owners were also charged with damaging the driveway or path to the restaurant and obstructing access.

The dispute also resulted in a separate case against Mansoor and others. At around 12:10 pm on October 3, when the Madhapur police patrol vehicle was near an Indian petrol pump, Mansoor, his wife and others allegedly drove onto the road and obstructed the police vehicle.

They were said to be sitting on the road, disrupting traffic and causing inconvenience to motorists, apart from obstructing the policemen in the discharge of their duties. Subsequently, a case was registered against Mansoor and others.

The police also said that the FSSAI license of Lucky Restaurant was suspended on September 26 following food safety and hygiene lapses found during an inspection.

Both cases are under investigation.
