Authorities at the University of Calicut have proposed to crack down on the use of political party flags and storage of weapons in hostels at the main campus of the University of Calicut at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district.
According to sources, the issue came up for discussion in the recent meeting of the Student Grievance Redressal Committee chaired by Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran.
There were complaints of some students attacking another group with deadly weapons. The police case is also related to this. It was alleged that certain student organizations were storing weapons in the men’s dormitory. There were also reports that flags of political organizations were a notable feature on campus. It was also alleged that members of certain organizations behaved as if certain hostel blocks were their fiefdoms, and even the wardens allowed this. The authorities warned that those who break the rules of the hostel will be prosecuted. Sources said on Saturday (October 3) that the board’s proposals will be forwarded to the Syndicate, which will take a final decision on the matter.
