In response to the wave of misinformation surrounding “Cyclone Shakti”, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a strong clarification and urged the public to remain calm and acknowledge the fundamental distinction between cyclonic circulation and cyclonic storm.
The clarification monitors the spread of unverified forecasts and contributions to social media falsely claiming the creation of a serious weather system. IMD categorically denied the existence of any such cyclone and warned against the dissemination of unverified information.
Habibur Rahman Biswas, head of the forecasting center in the Regional Meteorological Center in Calcutta, explained that the confusion stems from the wrong interpretation of meteorological terminology.
“Many people confuse any mention of the words” cyclonic “as an immediate threat of cyclone, which is not true,” Biswas said.
He developed that the cyclonic circulation concerns the phenomenon of the upper air, where the wind turns counter -clockwise at altitudes ranging from 1.5 km to 7.6 km above the ground. “This is what we call cyclonic circulation. It affects the weather patterns, but does not necessarily lead to a cyclone or has no serious impact on the ground,” he explained.
On the other hand, a cyclonic storm is a well-defined low-pressure system on the surface that is characterized by significantly lower central pressure-timely more than 10 milbara-oros result in strong surface winds and potentially destructive weather.
“Cyclonic circulation is an air circulation at higher altitudes-generally is not harmful, while cyclonic storm is a surface level, intense low-pressure system with high winds and potentially harmful effects. Abuse or misunderstanding of these terms can create unnecessary panic,” Biswas added.
Biswas emphasized the importance of relying on official sources and confirmed that “from now on IMD has not issued any cyclone warnings”. He assured that any hints of cyclone development would be formally communicated through official newslets.
At the beginning of this week, IMD issued a statement that urged the media and the public to refrain from spreading false or unverified weather information, and warned that such actions were merely contributing to unnecessary fear and confusion.
