Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday (May 27, 2026) ordered officials to remain on high alert in view of the orange (weather) alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for several districts of Telangana as widespread heavy rainfall lashed various parts of the state.

The Chief Minister instructed the officials to speed up paddy procurement operations at all centers and ensure additional measures to protect the harvested grain from rain damage. He emphasized that sufficient tarpaulins should be prepared in the collection yards to prevent the paddy stocks from getting wet. Officials have also been told to move tarpaulins from centers where orders have already been completed to places that are still handling arrivals.

With the IMD warning of strong gusty winds accompanying the rain, Mr Reddy appealed to people to remain cautious and alert.

Farmers in need

Farmers in several parts of the state have alleged that delay and carelessness in procurement of paddy fields are leading to losses, with the stock soaked in the continued heavy rains. They demanded that the government also procure rain-soaked rice and expressed concern over the damage caused to grain stored in shopping malls.

Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lashed Mandamarri in Mancherial district on Tuesday evening. Gusty winds reportedly blew away tarpaulins placed on rice paddies in shopping malls, leaving the grain completely soaked. In another incident, lightning struck a palm tree at Kannala village in Bellampalli mandal, setting it on fire and causing panic among residents in the area.
