Activists conducted a police action against the recent anti -war rally in Thrissur and claimed that in the state it caused concerns about “increasing intolerance to disagreement”.
The rally, organized by the anti -war front of people, was stopped by the police and several activists were taken into a preventive custody.
According to police activists, she justified the arrest by quoting potential violence from Sangh Parivar members who allegedly gathered with the intention of disrupting the peace march and attacking activists. “The logic is incomprehensible,” activists said. “Instead of retaining those who threaten to release violence, the police arrested peaceful protesters to avoid conflict.”
11 arrested
Eleven activists were arrested, including who was arrested for holding the label in the Keral Sahitya Academy.
K. Sahadevan, one of the organizers, condemned the police event. “There are two worrying questions,” he said. “First, why does the state allow groups like Sangh Parivar to imitate the violent tactics seen in parts of northern India? Secondly, why do the peace rally – something that is global practice during the war?”
Apathy
Even more worrying was the muted reaction from civil society and progressive circles of the state, the activists said. “From the left progressive activists is a worrying silence,” said Mr. Sahadevan.
Despite failure, the anti -war front of the people remains decisive. “We see war as a crime against humanity. We are more determined to build a strong united peace movement.”
