Shubman Gill makes script history, becoming the first captain to score two centuries in Tests and ODIs
Shubman Gill is scripting cricket history Shubman Gill did more than just another breathtaking innings on Wednesday night. He created a record that had never been achieved before in international cricket. The Indian skipper smashed an unbeaten 223 off 133 balls against West Indies in the second ODI in Guwahati, becoming the first captain to score a double century in both Test and ODI cricket. Gill had previously scored 269 against England at Edgbaston in 2025, making his latest feat a unique chapter in captaincy history. What made Guwahati’s innings even more remarkable was the situation. West Indies posted 405/7, their first ever ODI total of more than 400, after centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo. India then chased down 406 in just 43.3 overs, winning by eight wickets with 39 balls to spare.
From Edgbaston 269 to Guwahati 223*
Gill’s latest record cannot be viewed in isolation. In July 2025, while leading India in the Test series against England, he produced a historic innings at Edgbaston. His 269 off 387 balls became the highest score by an Indian captain in Test cricket and the highest score by an Indian captain in a Test in England. This innings has already placed Gill in an exclusive group of captains who have scored Test double hundreds in England. Now, with his double century, Guwahati has added an unprecedented ODI feat to that record. Gill became the first captain to score a double century in both Test and ODI cricket.
Fastest double century in ODI history
Gill reached his double century in just 117 balls, beating Ishan Kishan’s previous record of 126 balls. His 223* also became the highest individual score in a successful chase in ODIs, surpassing Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan.Gill hit 26 fours and eight sixes before reaching 223, finishing with the highest ODI score of his career. His previous best was 208 against New Zealand at Hyderabad in 2023.This makes Gill only the second Indian after Rohit Sharma to score multiple ODI double centuries. Rohit remains the only batsman with three ODI double tons.Gill’s individual brilliance came during a chase that entered the record books itself. India’s 406/2 became their most successful ODI chase and surpassed their previous record. It was also only the second time a team had successfully chased down a target of 400 or more in men’s ODI cricket, following South Africa’s famous 438-run chase against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.The foundation was laid by Gill and Rohit Sharma who put together a remarkable 255 run partnership. Rohit contributed 101 before being dismissed, leaving Gill to complete the chase alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad. The match therefore produced an unusual statistical symmetry: West Indies made 405, three of their batsmen scored centuries and India chased down the target with two centuries of their own.The Guwahati double century also took Gill to his 11th ODI century in just 68 innings. He became the fastest Indian to score 11 ODI hundreds, moving ahead of Virat Kohli’s mark of 82 innings. Hashim Amla remains the fastest overall to reach the milestone in 64 innings.
