Mumbai tech sacked as firm closes India tech team — ‘Given bad news on my birthday’ | Today’s news

A Mumbai-based software developer was given the pink slip on his birthday as their employer began a new round of layoffs to gradually reduce its reliance on India’s tech workforce.

The developer, who has five years of experience in the industry, shared the ordeal in a now-viral Reddit post that highlighted the sudden and unpredictable nature of the tech sector’s ongoing downsizing.

“7 others have been let go as the company slowly ends its reliance on the Indian technology team,” the engineer wrote in the post.

According to the post, the termination came as a significant shock to the technicians, who noted that they are deeply involved in the company’s operations and are “heavily dependent on multiple projects.”

Moving forward

Despite the sudden career setback, the developer shared that he is maintaining a forward-looking approach. Armed with a robust full-stack background that includes React, Node.js, React Native, AWS and SQL, techies said they are already preparing for upcoming job interviews and channeling efforts into a personal side project.

“Currently preparing for interviews and working on a personal project that made $400 (in the last 2 months). If it helps, 5 years of experience and work in React, Nodejs, React Native, AWS, SQL, among others,” wrote the technician.

Netizens react

The post quickly caught on on the platform, with the online tech community rallying behind the developer and offering up-to-the-minute words of encouragement, shared experiences and job recommendations.

Many users sympathized with the unfortunate timing of the layoff. “It feels like someone wrote my situation,” shared one user. “I was fired from Oracle this month on my birthday… So I totally feel your surprise… I hope bro next year we’ll have a better birthday in a better company with a better salary.

Another user echoed the sentiment, commenting: “Worst birthday present ever. Business decisions like this affect people like us and rarely matter at the corporate level. Don’t give up, you’ll make it.”

The comments section soon turned into a makeshift network hub, with several industry peers stepping in to offer direct recommendations.

“I can also help you with a referral but currently our company has mostly people in Bangalore and some people in Pune,” offered one commenter. “DM me if these places suit you. And happy birthday, take some time to process, clean up and come back stronger! Good luck.”

Another added: “Happy birthday OP!! don’t take it to heart, enjoy your week on the trip and start preparing. I can also give you a referral to Natwest UK bank. All the best.”

Others praised the entrepreneurial resilience of these techies and urged them to continue growing their side hustles while looking for work. “Scale your personal project when you show up for interviews,” advised one user. “The goal should be to have your own business in the next 10 years.”
