Higher Education Department orders private colleges to submit audit reports, more details

Following the Supreme Court’s order, the higher education department has directed all private universities in the state to submit audit reports, student attendance and other details for the last five years.

The director of higher education met vice-chancellors and registrars of private universities on Wednesday to discuss the matter.

Some universities have submitted the required documents. However, some objected to the details of the participation. “The Supreme Court has asked for financial and administrative disclosure, but the state government is even asking for student attendance data. Some universities have more than 4,000 students. How is it possible to provide the attendance data of all students for the last five years and why is this required?” asked the representative of the private college.

According to the court’s directions, the chief secretary to the government has to submit an affidavit to the Supreme Court with the details collected from each of the private universities.

The government also requires five years of signed audited financial statements and reports, copies of income tax calculations and returns filed for the past five years, trial balances, ledgers, bank statements, cash books, journals, investment records and reconciliations of various seed funds, income, utilization and closing of funds.
